Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers

Who can apply for a MoneyGram Account?

Individuals 18 or older, with a U.S. residential address, a mobile phone number and a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), may apply for an account with us.

Can I open an Account if I live outside the US?

MoneyGram Account is available to U.S. residents with a valid, unexpired government ID plus SSN or ITIN.

How do I sign up for a MoneyGram Account?

Existing MoneyGram Online Customer?

Sign into the MoneyGram mobile app and tap the message on your home page inviting you to sign up for a MoneyGram Account and Debit Card. Since you already have a profile with us, you’ll only need to enter a few personal details so we can complete the verification process.

New to MoneyGram?

You’ll need to create a profile with MoneyGram first. Simply download the MoneyGram app from your phone’s app store and tap Sign Up to get started.

Once your MoneyGram profile is created, you can begin the MoneyGram Account and Debit Card registration process.

What information do I need to provide to open an Account?

If you already have a MoneyGram profile, you’ll only need to provide us with the remaining personal information required to complete the identity verification process.

If you don’t have a MoneyGram profile, we will need your full name, residential address (can’t be a P.O. Box), phone number, SSN or ITIN, and date of birth.

You’ll also be required to provide us with your valid, unexpired government issued ID.

In rare cases, we may ask you to provide additional information or documents to confirm your identity, but only when it’s necessary.

Why do you need my SSN or ITIN to open an Account?

Your SSN or ITIN and other personal details help us verify that it's really you, and not someone trying to steal your identity.

Rest assured; your security is our top concern! We use industry-accepted database and network technologies to encrypt and protect consumer data stored in our database system, transmitted within our network or to partner networks, and to third-party providers who may assist MoneyGram with services.  MoneyGram maintains a robust information security program that drives compliance with data protection standards.

Do I need to have a smartphone to apply?

You’ll need a smartphone to complete your registration with MoneyGram. Once you’ve successfully opened your account, you’ll be able to view and manage your MoneyGram Account through the mobile app.

Do you offer joint accounts?

MoneyGram only allows one person per Account. These are designed for individual use so if you have a friend, family member, or significant other who’d also like a MoneyGram Account, encourage them to apply for their own Account.

How long does it take to open an Account?

It takes just a few minutes to apply, and most accounts are approved and opened within seconds of submitting the application.

If we need additional information to complete the verification process, it may take longer.
